Bossk - .1 and .2 EPs

Bossk is an atmospheric sludge metal band. They released two EPs and a split with Rinoa. They're also named after a bounty hunter in fucking Star Wars, man. How are you going to say that shit ain't cool? They're named after a goddamn reptile bounty hunter.

Assjack + Bocephus + Highwaymen = Hoedown

let's get this rodeo underway.

Assjack - Assjack (2009)

metallic hardcore release from the act that Hank III devised. there have been infinitely different musicians on the project, with Hank and another vocalist being the only ones who stuck around during most of its existence.

The Highwaymen - Highwaymen 1 + 2

this is the "bonus" I promised. these are two releases from supergroup The Highwaymen, which included Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson. pioneers of outlaw country, both of these releases are excellent. the greatest idea I've seen throughout the existence of country music.

Kodiak - Kodiak

Kodiak is a relatively young and unknown band, for as far as I know. This is rather unfortunate. I stumbled across an (official, mind you) download of their first and self-titled full length, a two track audial journey which wanders between a couple of musical borders. The rather gentile and tender sound brings back post rock memories, but the trip on itself drones off into icy cold territory. Definitely worth looking into! I bought the record itself the day after.

The Funeral Orchestra - Feeding the Abyss

Don't let the perhaps cheesy name of this awe-inspiring band put you off. This record is some of the most punishing, heavy and ritualistic Funeral Doom I have ever come across. No bombastic, keyboard-driven lame Skepticism worship, but baffling and hypnotizing riffs, minimal but oh so spine-tingling riffs and out of this world vocals.

Download

Birushanah - Akai Yami

Birushanah are band who unfortunately don't get the attention they warrant and deserve, playing a rather experimental form of what I think could still be qualified as Sludge/Doom. Complementing the pounding and extravagant rhythms with Japanese percussion, the craftiness and drive they carry in their sound sets them apart from plenty of bands. People who enjoy Corrupted's way of putting you out of your place will love this.

Amber Asylum - Garden of Love

It's a shame that this rather shabby looking cover does not complement this gorgeous piece of music at all.

"San Francisco's Amber Asylum return with their first new recordings in nearly five years . Five dark, brooding chamber works of misanthropic resonance and chilling emotional beauty. A blackened neo-classical masterpiece following their previous recordings on Relapse and Neurot as well as their acclaimed collaborations with Neurosis, Swans and Jarboe amongst others. Just under half an hour of new recordings, featuring the bonus soundtrack recording, "Serenade"."

Swans - Swans (EP)

Some people might even call this accessible. The year is 1982.

Download

Swans - Filth

Swans' first full-length. More straightforward and punishing than their s/t, a bit more experimental (some people call it Jazz influence, I don't think Gira cared much) but without losing their archetypical sound. My personal favourite. The year is 1983.

Download

Swans - Public Castration is a Good Idea

Probably one of my favourite live albums by now. Absolutely horrifying, bonegrinding and hypnotizing performance. I didn't believe this was live at first, it feels that real and tangible. The year is 1986, London and Nottingham.

Download

Swans - A Screw (EP)

Do you know what to expect? You better be ready. This release is also the first to feature Jarboe on vocal duty. The year is 1986.

Tool - Opiate

You should all know Tool by now, but this album focuses a lot less on the "Let's be as deep as possible" and more on the "FUCK YEAH AWESOME." Watch out for the hidden track - you'll dig it, dawgs.

Myrddraal - Blood on the Mountain

Myrddraal are (were?) a black metal from Australia, the land famous for being batshit insane and deadly as fuck. They play a very aggressive, powerful form of black metal, intertwined with "epic" clean vocals somewhat like those of Groa Willing and haunting acoustic passages. The lyrics revolve mainly around the Wheel of Time series, which I'm a big ole' gay for, but that's neither here nor there. This band is amazing, and you should definitely download this shit.

S.O.B.

S.O.B. are a hardcore / grindcore band coming from japan. Super aggressive, with strong punk roots this incredible hardcore band is definitely one of my favorites. I posted Dont be Swindle, a full length from 1987 and Leave me Alone an ep from 1986. These releases are commemorating the start of grindcore with bands like carcass, napalm death, and impetigo releasing early grind albums in the late 80s.

Raw Radar War/Deer Creek split

If you have a spare five dollars and some extra for shipping, you have no excuse not to buy this vinyl record off of CM distro's clearance section. Anyway, this kickass split features two relatively unknown bands, Raw Radar War and Deer Creek. RWR floats somewhere in between (crusty?) Sludge/Doom and (metallic?) Hardcore. Sludgecore? idkaidgaf. Deer Creek is a bit more Doomy overall, although I wouldn't call them trad. Doom. Very dirty rockin' with a sense of humour and a cool last cover, kudos if you know which two songs are mashed together and shame on you if you don't.

Moloch - Moloch

Moloch is based in the UK, playing some pretty damn grimey Sludge/Doom. This is their self-titled EP, released in 2008 via shifty records (and still available). Four tracks who trudge along in British waste, with some handsome hardcore shifts inbetween, supported by very potent vocals.

Earth - Pentastar: In The Style of Demons

Probably my favourite Earth record, right after Hex. Don't expect any mammoth drone'd out riffs here, guys. This is more of a fuzzed-out (seriously, this has more distortion than your average kvlt Black Metal record), too-slow-to-grab-my-spliff country-ish/desert-ish rock record with a fantastic Hendrix cover and too minimalist tracks in between. I bought this on vinyl on a whim, too, mainly because of the album art. And for some reason, it just makes fucking sense. It has everything you'd expect considering Carlson's environment and background.

Widely available on eJew, vinyl and CD version for cheap on Subpop Records website.

Earthride - Taming of the Demons

Earthride fit in the 'Southern' Doom Metal category, although not necessarily in the style of bands à la Down, Beaten Back To Pure, Weedeater etc. They have a pretty good grasp on Doom itself but add a bit of a biker touch to it, with throat-rippin', alcohol-drenched vocals (not unlike Dixie's), a heavy rhythm section and exciting leads overall. "Satan on my shoulder, might as well stride me by!"

CD version still available from SouthernLord and drifts on and off on eJew.

Mourn - Mourn

Mourn is a Traditional Doom band from the UK. They have a very laid-back, not-too-heavy-on-the-Sabbath sound and are very solid, mournful and rocking overall. They had a rough couple of first years with several line-up changes whilst the nineties UK doom scene itself was (r)evolving and beginning to grow the bands we know now, but eventually got back to their classic line-up with a female vocalist. Some people will find her voice something to get over, but trust me, when you hear it click, it is pretty awesome. I bought this on vinyl myself on a whime some months ago, thought I'd share it with you guys. Not my upload.

Still available in both CD and vinyl format from RiseAbove Records!

Gróa Willing - Vedrfolnir (Demo) (2009)

First demo from Gróa Willing, some kind of acoustic-whatever bunch of cool songs dealing with themes and personas within Norse Mythology, particularly a darker version of Svipdag's journey.
It's acoustic music with both harsh vocals and echoing clean voices, raw production and an almost post BM feel to it in some instances.
Soothing shit.

Griftegård - Psalmbok

Doom. Really fuckin good doom from Sweden, 2004-present.
that's about all the info you need, but I'll also say that the vocals are particularly killer.

stoner rock with a lot of metal influence. it's almost impossible to find information on the group what with their name being identical to a super-popular Stone Temple Pilots song.

The Seatbelts - Cowboy Bebop: Vitaminless

Posted this on my own blog, figured I'd repost here. Variety of genres represented here, and by far one of the best soundtracks an anime could have (especially since 99% of anime is shitty).

Candlemass Essentials

any fan of doom could sing at least one praise for Candlemass, the Swedish band which has still been releasing and performing heavy music after all these years. the world was given Death Magic Doom this year, which gives a more epic, heavy metal feel to the doomy foreground of Candlemass' past works.
I have compiled the albums which I believe are "essentials" to fans or to those who are prospecting the genre in its many forms. in short, there should be something for every metal fan.

1984 - Witchcraft Demo
1986 - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
1987 - Nightfall 1 / 2
1988 - Ancient Dreams 1 / 2 / 3
1989 - Tales of Creation
2009 - Death Magic Doom 1 / 2

note: Ancient Dreams contains a bonus disc which includes live tracks as well as a Candlemass interview.

Graveyard

Graveyard - Graveyard

An awesome combination of vintage traditional doom, and groooovy psychedelics with a stoner rock edge, Graveyard have it right. Like their Swedish counterparts, Witchcraft, they lay down the analogue sound low and heavy with a swingin' beat that other bands can't touch. Graveyard write incredibly smart riffs that will be stuck in your head for hours (The first three tracks are all choons beyond belief), and their singer reminds me a good bit of old school classics like Joe Cocker.

ALL IN ALL GET THIS FUCKING ALBUM! TRY IT AND BUY IT BECAUSE IT IS MAGNIFICO!

Leviathan - Shrouded By Fog

Awesome minimalist dark ambient, completely non-affiliated with the black metal Leviathan as far as I know.

Dalek - Gutter Tactics

Dalek is a lyrical wordsmith the likes of which the world has never seen before. If Kanye figured this guy out, he'd shit himself.

Gutter Tactics is a badass hip-hop album full of low-tuned beats and hard to hear yet ingenius phrases.

Ahab - The Divinity Of Oceans

Band: Ahab
Location: Germany
Genre: Funeral Doom

This album has been long anticipated by me, after the incredibly intense first full-length by the band, The Call Of The Wretched Sea. While the production on this album is somewhat softer than previously, it doesn't detract from the sonic texture at all. Everything about this album is impeccable, the added touches of melodicism are just absolutely perfect. A brilliant release from a relatively new band, and very much worth a listen.

Anal Cunt / Eyehategod - Tribute to Black Sabbath

heading off to the islands for 10 days, so I'll leave you all with a homework assignment.
this is some required listening, a split with Anal Cunt and Eyehategod entitled "In These Black Days: A Tribute to Black Sabbath Vol. 1" totaling in at 11.5 minutes.
there are following volumes of the In These Black Days series, but none can quite capture the almost light-hearted and soul-pounding combination of this record. you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll cum uncontrollably. now get to work, students.

Kange shows everyone his true

feelings about this band

What is there to say about Fuck Off and Die. Some half decent thrashy black metal with laughworthy lyrics and song titles. The guy takes teh mysanthrvpy to an uber level, with songs like "Sextermintation", "Fuck a Nun in the Ass", and "I Hate Homosexual Metalheads". hardcore basics

a friend of mine requested some "straight up hardcore basics."
the result is a collaboration of over 40 bands which helped to formulate and reinforce the sound of hardcore punk in the early- to mid-eighties around the world.
these are some of the legends who have influenced countless acts throughout the history of hardcore punk and its offshoots and will continue to do so until Armageddon.
enjoy the 14-part series including such acts as Discharge, The Germs, Rudimentary Peni, Circle Jerks, Minor Threat, English Dogs, GBH, Black Flag, Bad Brains, G.I.S.M., and many more.
